張英進，1959年出生於北韓咸鏡北道鏡城，在清津成長。一路從人民小學、中學念到金亨稷師範大學，就讀於大學時入伍從軍。退伍之後過著平凡的勞動生活，後來在1996年3月20日越過圖們江逃至中國，在中國待了1年又1個月，期間試圖逃往南韓卻屢屢失敗，最後決定再次返回北韓，並以徒步的方式在1997年4月27日凌晨，成功穿越東部休戰線逃往南韓。在南韓定居下來之後，將熱情投注在文學上，埋首於小說創作之中。
