國立臺灣大學歷史系學士、碩士，美國西雅圖華盛頓大學歷史學博士，曾任美國哈佛大學燕京學社訪問學者、日本國際日本文化研究中心外國人研究員、國立清華大學歷史研究所教授兼所長，現任中央研究院歷史語言研究所特聘研究員兼所長。最近的研究，主要是從性別的角度探討傳統中國的法律制度和醫療文化，最近則將視野擴大到近代臺灣與東亞世界。喜歡讀書、旅行和說故事。
