本書主要是為準備從事教育工作的教育院系學生而寫，也可供社會學系學生與在職教師閱讀、研究參考之用。書中除詳細介紹「教育社會學理論」、「教育的社會環境」、「教育機會均等」等主題，亦運用現代社會科學理論來分析「教育制度」、「學校社會組織」與「班級社會體系」，更具體探討「教學方法」、「教育專業」、「師生關係」、「青少年次文化」等重要議題。本書歷經多次修訂，在既有的主題架構下更新書中資料，使內容更為周全以符合時代性，是為新版特色。
陳奎憙教授乃臺灣教育社會學研究之先驅，與林清江教授、林生傳教授同為國內教育社會學體系之奠基者。在國內教育社會學研究萌芽之際，他們致力於學科架構的建立，並大力撰寫教科書，廣泛探究各種議題，為臺灣教育社會學界奠定了深厚的研究基礎。在陳奎憙教授等學者的領導下，我國已於民國八十九年成立「教育社會學學會」，臺灣教育社會學發展至今，已開花結果，令人欣喜，更期待未來其豐碩的研究成果。
