我国几千年来制定了一年二十四节气及七十二候的计年法。这是以地球绕太阳公转为基准指导农耕活动的历法基础。
清代画家刘锡玲作《七十二候诗笺》及《二十四节气信封》，作为介绍自然物候知识及中国民俗节气的诗笺、信封，水印木刻成集发行。这在当时引来文人学者一片赞扬、流传海内外。此诗笺上其画其诗或寓意深远，或以虚拟实，或引经据典，或阐释自然现象，皆言简意赅，发人深省。是中国诗画与节候相结合的罕有诗笺。是为研究中国版画艺术的重要经典著作。今以1897年《荣宝斋》水印木刻原版复制按原图尺寸付印，并将原文考证出处解释，便于现代阅读。
