张资平的短篇小说作品共有四十余篇，本书收录其短篇小说四篇，因其具有作者自叙传性质，被称为“身边小说”，这些作品描写的是二十年代中期W城（武昌）一个大学教授一家艰辛的生活。作品在反映知识分子凄惨处境的同时，愤怒谴责军阀混战，谴责“革命领袖”、“党国要人”等新贵投机革命、骄奢淫逸、卑劣无耻的种种行径。
张资平（1893-1959），原名张秉声，曾用名伟民，广东梅县人。是二十世纪三十年代初我国红极一时的作家之一。策划筹建了现代文学史上最重要的文学社团之一“创造社”。同时他又是个历史复杂和颇有争议的一位作家。他曾在伪日政权任职，是个汉奸。1945年抗战胜利后他在文坛上消失了。
