王实味（1906-1947），原名诗微，笔名实味、叔翰。出生于河南省潢川县。曾就读于北京大学，后因文惹祸，写下《政治家，艺术家》和《野百合花》两篇文章之后的第二年，被逮捕，1947年，“在战争环境中被错误地处决”。这是中国文学史上一起冤假错案。本书收录其乡土小说四篇：《杨五奶奶》、《毁灭的精神》、《陈老四的故事》、《小长儿与罐头荔枝》，这些作品反映了作者对祖国的真诚、对故乡的挚爱。王实味还用杂文的形式尖锐地揭露出他所见所闻的某些灰暗面，如《我对罗迈同志在整风检工动员大会上发言的批评》、《政治家，艺术家》等。
