《她为什么死》是王统照的短篇小说集。王统照的小说创作按时间划分，可分为三个阶段：早期、中期和后期。《她为什么死》将作者小说创作的三个阶段都囊括其中。早期小说是有关“爱与美”的，表现了作者从开始追寻“爱与美”的理想到最终幻灭的过程，同时也体现了作者的人道主义和博爱思想。中期小说是忧患深沉、凝重宏阔的农村小说，体现了作者由起先的关注理想人生，到逐渐对人生的伤感甚至一度消沉，但最终作者走出了困境，进入了现实世界，开始转向关注农村和农民的命运。后期是政治高压下的悲感情怀小说，表现了作者的爱国主义精神和投身民主运动的热情。
王统照（1897-1957），字剑山，笔名息庐、容庐。作家。曾任中国大学教授兼出版部主任，建国后，历任山东省文联主席，山东省文化局局长。著有多部小说。
