《西京杂记》是一部记载西汉佚事传闻的笔记体小说，凡帝后公卿的奢侈好尚，宫殿苑林，珍玩异物，以及舆服典章，文人佚事，民风民俗等都多有记述。其中人们喜闻乐道、传为佳话的“昭君出塞”，“卓文君私奔司马相如”等许多妙趣横生的故事皆首出此书，成为典故。还有一句成语“凿壁借光”，也是从该书的匡衡的故事中流传出来的。书中不少传说故事被后人引为典实，对诗词、戏曲、小说的创作都产生过一定的影响。
