本书作者2011年到2017年四赴南非，遍及南非九省及主要城乡地区，走访社区、大学、乡村、教堂，搜集种族与族群关系的一手资料，对南非社会进行了较为深入、系统的实地调查，参考了大量中外学界已有相关研究成果，围绕南非种族与族群形成、隔离、融合、发展这条主线，通过历时性与共时性相结合的分析，对南非多种族、多族群社会的形成，种族歧视与种族隔离制度的形成、发展与去除，后种族隔离时代南非的种族与族群关系等进行了研究。
本书是其主持的国家社科基金青年项目(新南非种族与族群关系变迁研究）成果，成果鉴定为“优秀”。
