本書以宏觀鳥瞰角度對中國數千年的藝術、文學作了概括描述和美學把握。
從原始遠古藝術的「龍飛鳳舞」，殷周青銅器藝術的「獰厲的美」，
先秦理性精神的「儒道互補」，楚辭、漢賦、漢畫像石之「浪漫主義」，
「人的覺醒」的魏晉風度，到六朝、唐、宋佛像雕塑，
宋元山水繪畫以及詩、詞、曲各具審美三品類，
明清時期小說、戲曲等等的藝術表現，
作者皆提出了許多前人所未發的重要觀念，形成美學上的重要議題。
湖南長沙人。一九五四年北京大學哲學系畢業。
曾任中國社會科學院哲學研究所研究員，美國科羅拉多學院客席講座教授。
一九八Ｏ年被選為中華全國美學學會副會長，一九八八年被巴黎國際哲學院(IIP)選為院士。
