本書為林明德教授對於日本史通盤式的探討，從政治、經濟、社會與文化等各個角度，廣泛且深入介紹其歷史文化、民族特性和思想觀念，並由遠古時代述及當代情況，俾使讀者能對這個東亞文明島國有貫通古今的認識。
畢業於國立臺灣師範大學史地系，日本東京大學東洋史碩士、博士。曾任國立臺灣師範大學歷史系教授、歷史系所主任；東海大學、日本筑波大學兼任教授；中央研究院近史所研究員。研究專長為日本史以及中國近現代史，著有《近代中日關係史》、《袁世凱與朝鮮》、《日本近代史》、《日本通史》等多本專書。2013年12月榮獲由日本政府頒贈的「旭日中綬章」獎項，肯定其長期致力並促進臺日學術與文化交流的貢獻。
