《中國人的德行》切斯特·何爾康比在中國居住多年，幾乎與中國各個角落、各個階層的人們都有過接觸，他在書中對他所看到的中國社會作了一個全方位的鳥瞰。雖然不免有許許多多的偏見、誤解與曲解。有的是西方人所固有的偏見與曲解，有的是文化上的誤讀和誤解．但大體上還是勾勒出了一幅中國的社會的真實畫卷。甚至在一些方面還具有理性的現代化的外來旁觀者的深刻洞察力。
切斯特·何爾康比(18441912),中文名何天爵,美國傳教士，外交官。1869年來華,來華期間曾在北京負責公理會所辦的教會學校，後任駐華使館翻譯、頭等參贊等職。美國前總統格蘭特訪華期間曾接待陪同，在處理美國僑民在華經濟糾紛和教案方面不遺餘力。回國後出版《中國人本色》一書，另撰有《TheRealArmyandNavyinTheRealChineseQuestion》等作品。
