指畫又名指頭畫，顧名思義，即是以手指為畫具的中國畫。在傳統中國繪畫中，指畫是較晚出現的畫種。據相關研究，指畫的創始人是清代畫家高其佩。二十世紀以來，以指畫揚名者，在中國有潘天壽等人；在臺灣，則有鄭月波、容天圻，以及本書的主角者—劉銘先生。指書、指畫是劉銘先生對於臺灣藝壇卓越的貢獻。

　　同時，劉銘的一生乃是戰後外省籍移民的縮影，他出身山東安邱書香世家，中國抗戰勝利後，因緣際會於民國三十七年（1948）間獨自來臺，與家人失聯，飄泊臺灣。其一生，無論是指書畫藝術或是他的社會閱歷都是值得記錄，以供學術研究的重要素材與課題。
