本書收論文九篇。從考證角度言，或用新材料以證舊說之不誣，或重新爬梳舊材料以辨疑古者之不足信。校勘而旁涉前賢始作因緣，辨偽則嚴判通儒學問識見。考察文本，或純粹歸納，明作者之用心；或旁推發隱，表著述之微言。〈論魯迅之「中國小說史略」〉及〈托洛茨基對魯迅之影響〉二文，或措意中外比較，或不避政治禁忌，尤足見研究視野之開闊與論學態度之謹嚴。
祖籍浙江上虞，一九四六年生於香港中文大學，獲文學學士、碩士學位，後赴美國哈佛大學進修，獲文學碩士學位。現任香港中文大學中文系高級講師。《說文段注牴牾考》、《高本漢諧聲譜》。
