千古冤忠，岭南秀士，辽东督师。袁崇焕（1584-1630），明将领。广东东莞人，字元素。万历四十七年进士，授邵武知县。天启二年擢兵部职方主事。天启三年筑宁远城。四年率兵东巡，进兵备副使、右参政。五年遣将分居锦州、松山、右屯等地，修缮城郭，开疆土二百余里，使宁远为内地。六年后金（清）攻宁远，他布置战守，炮伤努尔哈赤致死，擢右佥都御史、辽东巡抚。七年，皇太极率军攻锦州、宁远、皆为其所败。后受魏忠贤排挤，去职。崇祯即位，起授兵部尚书督师蓟辽。崇祯二年后金军绕道自古北口入长城，进围北京。他率师千里赴救，后金用反间计，崇祯误信他有通敌密约，逮捕入狱，为魏蜇忠贤余党弹劾，被磔死。
