蜂巢式物聯網自LTE Cat 1開啟標準演進之路，隨著行動通訊從LTE向5G遷移，3GPP也效仿4G推出LTE-M的作法，在2022年凍結的Release 17標準中訂定RedCap作為5G原生物聯網標準，全面精簡5G性能，以期滿足物聯網低成本、低功耗的需求。標準甫推出，晶片大廠如聯發科技和高通先後宣布進行RedCap驗證、發布RedCap晶片產品，面對新世代物聯網積極卡位。

RedCap性能介於5G NR和NB-IoT之間，將補足未來4G Cat 1/Cat 4退網產生的缺口，並能運用5G技術靈活部署。R17版本初步為RedCap設定三大應用：穿戴式裝置、工業無線感測器及影像監控，並預計在R18持續精簡降低成本，以具備市場競爭力的價格和性能推動蜂巢式物聯網5G轉型。
