本書原名《越南史略》，法文譯名《Histoire du Việt-Nam》，內容分成五卷：「上古時代」、「北屬時代」、「自主時代（統一時期）」、「自主時代（南北紛爭時期）」、「近今時代」，簡明扼要地序述了越南歷史。此外，本書是現代越南人用「國語字」自編的第一部通史。7陳重金（1882-1953年），越南河靜省人，出生於儒生家庭，自少受漢文化熏陶，並曾赴法國黑倫（Melun）留學。1945年4月，成為阮朝末代皇帝保大帝阮永瑞的首相，同年9月北方越南民主共和國建立時，陳重金仍繼續留在南越，1953年12月2日死於大叻。
