對於為什麼血管會硬化這一問題，似乎還不能說清。最近，德國慕尼克工業大學藥物研究所的科學家們對此做了解答，並將他們的研究成果公佈在一期的《自然》雜誌上。他們在人體中發現了一種名叫IRAG的蛋白質，這種蛋白質能夠使血管軟化，從而增大血管截面積，使血壓降低。但是，一旦IRAG的功能受到干擾，血管不能受到它的作用，就開始硬化。由此可見，高血壓有許多合併症或與許多疾病並存，若不及時進行有效的治療，可大大增加心腦血管病的發生率和死亡率。
