本書為生技產業的開路先鋒蘇遠志先生之訪談錄。蘇遠志於1929年生於雲林北港，臺大農化系畢業後留學日本，取得東京大學博士學位。返臺後歷任臺大農化系主任、所長與農學院院長。其於留學日本期間，即以微生物醱酵法取代小麥水解法製造味精，協助國內產業擺脫日本專利權的限制，生產味精，降低成本且提高產量，此外，並在味精醱酵的技術基礎上，研究具吸水、保濕性的聚麩胺酸，讓國內生技產業得以開發美容、尿布、土壤改良劑等高科技產品，也陸續研發微藻、鳳利酵素、尿激酶、機能性甜味料等，且技術移轉給業界進行商業化生產，對於臺灣生物科技產業影響深遠。
