文昌帝君是主宰人間功名利祿的神祇之一，與大魁星君、朱衣星君、純陽帝君、關聖帝君，合稱「五文昌」，同受士人敬奉。據《文昌帝君陰騭文》所載，文昌帝君累世為儒，特別注重品格與道德，陰騭文中勸人廣積陰德，以招福致祥，不僅以文昌帝君自身、于公、竇禹鈞、宋郊、孫叔敖等四人善行得報的故事為例，同時羅列諸項有益於福報的善行，包括：個人品德修持(正直、孝悌)、禮佛奉真、賑濟孤苦、護命放生、修橋造路、點燈齊舟等，強調如能依此奉行諸善，即能常得吉神護佑。
