學提琴的人少不了每天要自己調音，弦拉斷了要自己換，有時候要自己磨橋、調音柱…。但是學鋼琴的人只接觸得到鍵盤。調音？請人調。因此他們對鋼琴是何物所知不多。學校老師從來不教這個。高中生作科展即使不是沒有也很少人作這方面的研究。但是印度諾貝爾獎得主拉曼（Chandrasekhara Raman，1888–1970）年輕時最早開始從事的研究是關於提琴的弦的發聲問題。1917他在加爾各答大學找到教職就轉而從事光學研究，後來發現拉曼效應而得到諾貝爾獎。費因曼 （Richard Feynman，1918-1988） 雖然是個音樂白癡 ，卻也研究過鋼琴的調音問題因為他有一台鋼琴。很多科學家都從事過樂器的研究，不過這些研究似乎都不是近代科學的主流，有些人是退休後才作。可是裡面包含的物理其實一點都不簡單，而且與其它領域的研究有著密切的關聯。
