毛澤東是中華人民共和國的創建者，但除了軍事和政治，他在文學上的成就也燦然可觀。本書精選了毛澤東自一九○六至一九七五年間的作品共一百首，涵蓋了他早年、中年、晚年各種體裁的作品。

毛澤東詩詞給人第一個感覺是壯闊，作品中描寫的很多是萬里江山、千軍萬馬的場面，以及英雄的豪邁氣概，這也是歷來詮釋者所習慣著重的，但若仔細品讀，作品裡的字裡行間也不乏對人生的感懷，可說粗曠細膩，兼而有之。

毛澤東常用詩詞來言志，他寫的每一首詩、每一首詞，差不多都在道說一個歷史事件或是交代一個相關的政治背景，因此讀他的詩，也等於縱覽一部中國近代史。

本書提供了另一個認識毛澤東的途徑，也希望帶給詩詞愛好者一個全新的閱讀感受。
