《孟子》一书记录了孟子的整体思想，主要是与其他各家思想的争论、对弟子的言传身教、游说诸侯等内容，由孟子及其弟子（万章等）共同编撰而成。《孟子》记录了孟子的治国思想、政治策略（仁政、王霸之辨、民本、格君心之非，民贵君轻等）和政治行动，成书约在战国中期，是儒家“四书”之一。其学说出发点为性善论，主张德治。《孟子》行文气势磅礴，感情充沛，雄辩滔滔，富有感染力，流传后世，影响深远。
孟子名轲，战国时期伟大的思想家、政治家，儒家学派的代表人物。与孔子并称“孔孟”。后世追封孟子为“亚圣公”，尊称为“亚圣”。孟子主张法先王、行仁政；学说上，推崇孔子，反对杨朱、墨翟。他主张仁政，提出“民贵君轻”的民本思想，游历于齐、宋、滕、魏、鲁等诸国，效法孔子推行自己的政治主张，前后历时二十多年。
