本書以家風家訓為主題，用成語作切入點，鈎沉歷史典故，講述歷史故事，闡釋歷史規律。書中從家風的定義，夫妻、父子、兄弟、朋友之間相處之道，中國古代家庭的經典家風內容等方面展開講述，涉及齊家治國、耳濡目染、康莊大道等百餘個成語，內容豐富有趣，語言通俗幽默，可讀性强，實用性高。
王立群，1945年生，祖籍山東，生在安徽，長於河南。1982年畢業於河南大學中國古代文學專業，獲文學碩士學位。現任河南大學文學院教授、中國古典學博士生導師、中國《史記》研究會常務理事。

研究方向主要為兩漢魏晉南北朝文學。研究成果主要集中於山水遊記研究和《文選》研究兩個方面。獨立承擔國家社會科學基金項目《〈文選〉版本、注釋綜合研究》、全國高等院校古籍整理研究工作委員會項目《歷代選學文獻輯考與研究》的研究，為《文選》學研究的權威人士。

2006年開始擔任中央電視台《百家講壇》欄目主講人之一，同年8月在《百家講壇》「十大名嘴」評選中，以「最學者化」入選。
