《海明威短篇小說集》收錄了《老人與海》、《乞力馬札羅的雪》等11部海明威最膾炙人口的作品。《老人與海》講述了古巴老漁夫桑提亞哥在連續八十四天沒捕到魚的情況下，終於獨自釣上了一條大馬林魚，但這條魚實在太大，把他的小船在海上拖了三天才筋疲力盡，被他殺死，並綁在小船的一邊，在歸程中一再遭到鯊魚的襲擊，回港時只剩下魚頭魚尾和一條脊骨。這雖然是一個故事簡單、篇幅不大的作品，但含義豐富，很多教師把它作為英雄主義教育的教材，推薦給廣大學生，使之成為經久不衰的暢銷書。《海明威短篇小說集》一經出版就得到了評論家們一致好評，使海明威獲得了1953年度的普利策獎和1954年度的諾貝爾文學獎。《海明威短篇小說集》所選的11部短篇小說也是他所有短篇小說中的精華。
