1977年10月25日，巴特母親逝世的翌日起，巴特將自己對母親的思念之情──他的喪慯──隨手誌於紙片上。
喪母劇痛，讓巴特面對自己的死亡，也重新思考遺忘、勇氣、時間、書寫等許多生命課題。他照常上課，完成許多寫作計畫、旅行講學，與朋友談笑，不讓人察覺他的悲慟，只有在日記裡，他卸下了武裝。他不再是理路清晰、言詞犀利的批評家、語言學家，而回到「家常」，回到血肉：一句話、一個畫面、一張照片都能讓他淚水潰堤。
書中330篇按序編入的文字，讓我們看到一個惶惑、恐懼、糾葛的巴特。他充滿矛盾：他渴望孤獨，又需要朋友；他悲傷得萬念俱灰，卻能神智清明地審視自己；他不斷對語言的限制與虛妄提出質疑（即使書寫達到極致仍是徒然），但他唯一的救贖──也只能是書寫。他想掙脫悲慟，重拾平靜；一方面又樂於沉溺其中，因為只有在悲慟之中，他才能與母親同在。
這本日誌有助理解巴特的思想，及同時期作品如《明室》等等，它們是巴特於喪母心情影響下所撰寫的，而其源頭就是《哀悼日記》裡的札記。
