叔本华的主要哲学思想都体现在《作为意志和表象的世界》一书中。全书共分四篇，第一篇可被看作是全书的导论，也可以和第二篇合起来看作全书的第一部分，主要讨论认识论和“真”的问题。第三篇关涉“美”的问题，而第四篇是关于“善”和人生的终极关怀问题的。在《作为意志和表象的世界》的第一卷“世界作为表象初论”中，叔本华继续讨论人的认识能力，依次探讨了上述四个知识领域的层次问题。
阿·叔本华，德国有名哲学家。唯意志主义的创始人和主要代表之一。在人生观上，受印度教和佛教思想影响，持悲观主义的观点，主张忘我。叔本华出生于德国但泽(今属波兰，更名为格但斯)的一个银行家家庭，自幼性情孤僻。父亲海因里希·弗洛里斯·叔本华（HeinrichFlorisSchopenhauer）是很好成功的商人，后因溺水去世。母亲约翰娜·叔本华（JohannaSchopenhauer）是当时颇有名气的作家，与歌德等文豪有交往。他和母亲的关系一直不好，隔阂很好深，很后关系破裂。叔本华继承了父亲的财产，使他一生过着富裕的生活。
