理雅各编*的《孟子(英文版)》七篇是中国古代政治学、伦理学、哲学、教育学、心理学乃至美学的经典，堪称中国古代的百科全书。而这部百科全书立论的根本点则是孟子的人性善观点，作为孟学核心的仁政思想也是由此而阐发出来的。全书讨论的内容无一不围绕着人性、人伦、人道、人格。一句话，无不围绕着人和人类社会。其立论之精深，涉及学科之广，称得上是一部体大思精的古代人学的百科全书。
理雅各（JamesLegge，1815年-1897年）自小便深受传教士影响，立志传道，读书时潜心研习阿拉伯语、拉丁语和汉语，24岁即南下马六甲，创办学校、建立教堂、翻译书籍，期间历尽周折，几次死里逃生。虔诚的宗教信仰与责任感给了他坚韧的毅力与九死不悔的决心，也为他后期历经二十载苦译典籍打下了基础。译者，原著之忠顺仆从也。理雅各译书，注释虽多，却鲜少表明个人爱憎，此一句反问，实属罕见，颇能代表理雅各的真实感想。
