《时间机器》是英国著名作家H.G.威尔士于19世纪创作的一部科幻小说，后被世界认为是其代表作。本作品的内容最初发表于1895年。故事内容以人类进行时间隧道旅行为主线展开，并允许人类进行时光倒流。也正由于此作品，引发了后来很多作家的创作灵感，使很多作家写出科幻小说作品。
赫伯特·乔治·威尔斯（HerbertGeorgeWells，1866.9.21-—1946.8.13）先后四次获得诺贝尔文学奖提名。科幻小说界的莎士比亚。20世纪英国现实主义文学三杰之一。一生着作100余部，多种科幻题材的开山鼻祖，开创了“时间旅行”“外星人入侵”“反乌托邦”等现代科幻小说的主流话题。社会活动家，曾与列宁、斯大林和罗斯福等会面。1895年，《时间机器》出版，该年被认定为“科幻小说诞生元年”，预言了空战和原子弹。与儒勒·凡尔纳一起，开创了科幻小说的新时代。
