勞倫斯雖以小說名世，但作為意象主義詩歌的先驅之一，其詩歌造詣毫不亞於小說成就。其詩作被稱為“20世紀英語詩歌中最有價值和最富內涵的作品”。也有人歎息道：“假若勞倫斯只寫詩歌，他一定會被看成是非常重要的英語詩人之一。”當代文學批評家哈羅德?布盧姆（Harold Bloom）認為：“既親近布萊克又親近惠特曼的勞倫斯，是一種視域性絕望的高潮，而這種視域性絕望在我看來似乎是英語最偉大詩歌的中心。”
