楊國樞先生早期調查了一般大學生和僑生成就需求。在1970年代的個人現代性研究計畫中，發現成就動機和現代性呈正相關，之後又再繼續探究國中生和大學生成就動機，在提倡心理學本土化之後，建構了華人社會取向的成就動機理論。在1970年代中，楊國樞與鄭伯壎和黃光國先後探究工作士氣、領導方式和工人人格特質等因素。在積極推動本土化學術研究中，先生呼籲管理要本土化，要考量華人特有的社會心理因素，尤其是華人的關係取向。到1990年探究儒家倫理和組織行為的關係。
