儒家积极入世，无论是《大学》还是《中庸》，都在强调“修身”，而“修身”的*极目的是为了“治天下”，并不是为了自身的升华与解放，于是“治天下”这个目的也掺杂了很多功利的色彩，决定了“修身”的不纯粹，更没有提出具体解决办法，即，若入世者不愿修身，又当若何？修身、齐家、治国、平天下，本是一条理想的人生道路，可惜反之却不成立。一国之治，不能寄希望于一人一身之修为，儒学理论，也无法将中国历史带离兴亡更替的循环往复。
理雅各（JamesLegge，1815年-1897年）自小便深受传教士影响，立志传道，读书时潜心研习阿拉伯语、拉丁语和汉语，24岁即南下马六甲，创办学校、建立教堂、翻译书籍，期间历尽周折，几次死里逃生。虔诚的宗教信仰与责任感给了他坚韧的毅力与九死不悔的决心，也为他后期历经二十载苦译典籍打下了基础。译者，原著之忠顺仆从也。理雅各译书，注释虽多，却鲜少表明个人爱憎，此一句反问，实属罕见，颇能代表理雅各的真实感想。
