在理雅各之前，语言学家威廉·琼斯爵士（SirW.Jones）已于18世纪译出过《诗经》，理雅各在翻译《诗经》的过程中也多有借鉴，只不过威廉·琼斯爵士的译文颇有借题发挥之嫌，并不是对《诗经》的忠实再现。翻译所讲究的“忠实”绝不等于“一一对应”。就诗歌翻译而论，想要达到“信”的标准并不难，但要同时做到“信”、“达”、“雅”，简直难如登天，*无法逾越的便是“格律”这道鸿沟。
理雅各（1815年－1897年）是一名虔诚的伦敦布道会传教士，精通阿拉伯语、拉丁语和汉语，二十几岁便远渡重洋到中国传教。历史总是惊人的相似，理雅各和一千二百多年前的玄奘一样，身负宗教使命，却以笔为桥，以纸为媒，沟通东西；1861年到1886年的25年间，在友人王韬、助译黄胜的协助下，理雅各翻译了“四书”、“五经”等中国主要典籍28卷。
