《神曲》就是人的精神结构的剖面图。从弗洛伊德心理学的角度，地狱就是一个本我放纵的世界，骄、妒、怒、惰、贪财、贪色、贪吃这些人类的本能和欲望不能节制；炼狱就是自我逐步涤除自己的罪恶，脱离本我走向新生的过程，里面住着的七种罪恶的灵魂，虽有罪过但是程度较轻且已经悔悟，是能够节制的自我，经过忏悔之后就能升天；天堂是上帝、天使和善者的乐园，真善美的化身，是超越节制的超我。从人的精神结构的三个剖面，对应《神曲》三界，也可以看出但丁的价值取向和对人的本质的探索。
但丁(1265—1321)意大利诗人，欧洲文艺复兴&有代表性的作家和开拓者之一。恩格斯称他是“中世纪的最后一位诗人，同时又是新时代的最初一位诗人”。主要作品有《神曲》《新生》《筵席》《论俗语》和《帝制论》等。
