作品以英国西南部威塞克斯“一片苍茫万古如斯”的埃格敦荒原为背景，描写了五个青年男女不同的悲剧命运。其中的女主人公游苔莎是当代英国小说里被描写得成功的几位女主人公之一，而故事发生的地点埃格敦荒原则是风景描写的典范。它是哈代的小说艺术开始走向成熟的重要标志，是哈代的重要作品之一。
托马斯·哈代出生于1840年，直至1928年离开人世，算作家中的长寿的人，活了88岁。进入19世纪末期的时候，托马斯哈代基本上没有什么作品问世。为何？就要从哈代的《无名的裘德》1895年发表之后引来文学批评界一致的批判声音说起。对《无名的裘德》所进行的书评，有些已经不再是心平气和的书评，而是达到了公开谩骂程度。托马斯·哈代一气之下将所有的小说写作计划搁置了起来。他发誓要重新回到诗歌创作中去，直至生命结束的那一天的来临。
