本书作为我社“经典英语文库”3辑中的一种，精选由法国有名思想家、哲学家、教育家、文学家让·卢梭的经典作品《社会契约论》。作品分为四卷：论述了社会结构和社会契约，第二卷阐述主权及其权利，第三卷阐述及其运作形式，第四卷讨论几种社会组织。《社会契约论》中主权在民的思想，是现代制度的基石，深刻地影响了欧洲的革命运动和英属北美殖民地的独立战争。《社会契约论》一次提出了“天赋人权和主权在民的思想”。开头就提出“人是生而自由的，但却无往不在枷锁之中”。它刚一问世就遭到了止。卢梭本人也被迫流亡到英国。但《社会契约论》所提倡的理论却很快风靡全世界。它引发了震惊世界的法国大革命。法国国家格言“自由、平等、博爱”便来自《社会契约论》。1789年法国国民代表大会通过的《人权宣言》中“社会的目的是为大众谋福利的”、“统治权属于人民”等内容充分体现了《社会契约论》的精神。
法国十八世纪启蒙思想家、哲学家、教育家、文学家，民主政论家和浪漫主义文学流派的开创者，启蒙运动代表人物之一。主要著作有《论人类不平等的起源和基础》《社会契约论》《爱弥儿》《忏悔录》《新爱洛伊丝》《植物学通信》等。
