山田美妙，小說家、詩人、評論家。言文一致體（白話文運動）與新體詩先驅。與友人尾崎紅葉共組硯友社，刊行「我樂多文庫」進行文學活動。成名以後與紅葉對文學理念的相異，使他與硯友社漸行漸遠。1889年發行的小說「蝴蝶」由於插畫中有女性裸體而遭到禁賣處分。其後由於女性問題遭到文壇排斥，雖仍有作品發表，但皆不受到當代重視。病逝時幾乎已無文人在其左右。
